No chapters after Compressor export?

Hi folks,

I'm editing old 16mm family film for a client into an NTSC SD file.

The file is edited with multiple chapters (16 or so) all laid out.

I exported a prores file from FCX. I do this because I also give the clients a larger file for self editing later if they want.

I drop that file into Compressor and choose the H264 for HD preset. Does the trick, files look great and it's slick to use.

The only trouble is that chapter markers don't show up in the final .m4v file! 😟 I do see them in the compressor window after importing the file.

If I use the HD 720p file, the resuling .mov DOES contain the chapter markers.

The m4v files, I find, are more compatible with both Windows and Mac computers - well, at least the clients don't need to install anything extra to view them.

I'm using Compressor 4.2.2 on 10.10.5

Any insight or wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Brian

Not sure I understand.

Do you mean that the markers don't translate to the PC video apps? I can't reproduce what you're describing on Macs.

And do you find that m4vs are more cross platform- friendly than MP4s?

First, "HD 720p" tells us nothing. What codec is being used? Not all codecs support chapters.

Now, you took a standard def video and transcoded it to HD, which means you lost visual quality, not a great idea. Enlarging video looses visual quality and is very frowned upon.

As for chapter markers, they can be made in an .m4v file.

- Apply the "SD 480p" preset from the "Video Sharing Services" category.

- In the Inspector, Video section, click the "Change" button for "QuickTime Settings".

- Choose the "MPEG-4 Video" preset.

- Add your chapter markers.

You should now see chapters in the resulting video file created.

Hi Ben,

Thanks. The HD 720P is the preset in Compressor. I just dropped and dragged it.

I'm definitely not blowing the SD up into HD. The preset is for sizes up to HD so it will maintain the original dimensions for anything under.

I'll try your suggestions for sure - thank you. I appreciate the feedback.

Cheers,
Brian
